Characters appearing/mentioned in the story

Eiko Tsuge(柘植 瑛子) - Assistant editor for a small publishing company called Jisōsha(時創舎). Shin'ichi Yasuhara(安原 慎一) was the first poet she worked with. She just cannot believe that Yasuhara would commit suicide. So she goes to Keishichō to talk to the detectives in charge of the case. She recognizes Trio the Sōichi as the detectives who investigated the scene of Yasuhara's death. They try to convince her that Yasuhara's death must have been a suicide, but she threatens to write terrible things about the police. That's when Inspector Ukyō happen to walk by, and Sergeant Itami tells her that she should talk to the inspector. After listening to Eiko describe the events that lead to Yasuhara's death, the inspector starts to investigate.

She was hoping that, with Yasuhara's idol-like looks along with his talented poetry writing skills, Yasuhara could attract more fans to the world of poetry, which has a small fan base.

Shin'ichi Yasuhara(安原 慎一) - A talented poet who had been touted as Arthur Rimbaud's reincarnation. His parents passed away when he was young, and he grew up at St. Mary's Orphanage(聖マリア児童園 Sei Maria Jidōen) an orphanage built next to a church which he still frequently visits.

He always had a pencil and paper in his possession so that he could immediately write down ideas as they came to him. When he wrote the final drafts of his poems, he used Japanese paper, but unlike everyone else in his class, he wrote on the rough side of the paper.

He had posted a bunch of sticky notes around in his room, which included a note indicating the directions to St. Mary's Orphanage and a note reminding himself that he already bought toothbrushes on a certain date. He had numerous toothbrushes and stationery items in the drawers of his desk.

He attended Associate Professor Kido's seminars, though they did not get along: Yasuhara constantly criticized Associate Professor Kido at these seminars for not writing poems recently.

He worked with Eiko to publish his first book, a collection of all the poems he came up with as a student. He left instructions for all the money made from the sales of his poem collection to be forwarded to St. Mary's Orphanage.

He recently died after drinking a poison-laced cup of water while he was on stage at Kōshirō Kido(城戸 幸四郎)'s graduation poem reading event. Water was the theme of the even that day, and long blue paper representing water covered the stage. Shortly before the event started, he appeared confident and told Eiko that he was going to change the world of poetry with the reading of his poem.

Once his performance started however, he appeared to become anxious after he unrolled his scroll. (Later, they find out that nothing was written on that scroll.) Then the stage lights went out for over ten seconds, which they find out Yasuhara himself scheduled. This, along with the fact that a smoke machine had filled the stage with smoke, caused some of the audience members to panic, mistaking the smoke for fire. Once the stage lights came back on, Yasuhara started to recite a poem, struggling to remember the words. He then took a sip from that drink of water, resulting in his death.

CSI Yonezawa found triangle shaped fluorescent tapes stuck at the stage leading to the table where Yasuhara kept his cup of water, mixed in with the paper on stage. Only two people were sitting close enough to poison Yasuhara's drink during the blackout and return to his seat: Associate Professor Kido and Igarashi.

Kei'ichi Horie(堀江 恵一) tells Inspector Ukyō that Yasuhara's death is eerily similar to how Tomomi Umezu(梅津 朋美) committed suicide seven years ago.

Kōshirō Kido(城戸 幸四郎) - Poet and associate professor at Tōto Art College(東都芸術大学 Tōto Geijutsu Daigaku). His released his poem collection Freeze of Life(生命のフリーズ Seimei no Furīzu) four years ago through the publishing company Jisōsha(時創舎). The poems in the book included "The Desert and Origami(砂漠と折り紙 Sabaku to Origami)" and A Young Girl and Her Poison(少女と毒薬 Shōjo to Dokuyaku)," a poem Tomomi told Horie that she was going to write years ago shortly before she committed suicide.

He uses triangle shaped sticky notes when correcting his students' works. Some students in his class write their works on wooden boards. These sticky notes make it possible to correct the poems no matter what they're written on. He cuts the sticky notes into these triangle shape so that they can be used as arrows to point out locations in the students' poems.

Someone used the computer at his university office to order strychnine nitrate from an underground web site. Though the individual who made the order used a fake name, the poison was delivered to his university office.

Kei'ichi Horie(堀江 恵一) - President of a small publishing company called Jisōsha(時創舎). He used to work at a major publishing company and worked with Tomomi Umezu(梅津 朋美) while he was employed there, However, he was let go after it was discovered that one of the poems in Tomomi's upcoming book was very similar to a poem Kōsuke Igarashi(五十嵐 孝介) read at a poem reading event several months ago.

He also published Kōshirō Kido(城戸 幸四郎)'s poetry collection several years ago when he was the only one running Jisōsha(時創舎).

He recalls that Tomomi kept a note with her poems that went missing after her death.

Kōsuke Igarashi(五十嵐 孝介) - Stalwart of poetry who is rumored to be close to receiving the Order of Culture(文化勲章 Bunka Kunshō). He provided a room in his home for Yasuhara to stay, as a way of helping out and nurturing a young talented poet. He noticed that recently, Yasuhara struggled to come up with new poems.

Tomomi Umezu(梅津 朋美) - A talented poet who committed suicide 7 years ago at a poem reading event after proclaiming her innocence. At the time, she had won numerous awards in poetry and even had plans to have her works published by a major publisher. She was accused of plagiarizing Igarashi's poem however, and the major publisher canceled the plans to publish her works.

Yasuhara read one of Tomomi's poems while he was growing up at the orphanage which inspired him. They exchanged numerous letters and in them, Tomomi encouraged him to write poems.

Ariyoshi(有吉) - Yasuhara's classmate He remembers that Yasuhara's recent behavior was odd. Yasuhara broke promises without any remorse. Yasuhara also was emotionally unstable, suddenly getting upset or starting to cry without reason.
