Even though the police ruled Junko Nakatsuru(中津留 順子)'s death to be natural, Junko Nakatsuru(中津留 順子)'s father Kengo(健吾) believes that his daughter was killed by a stalker and distributes fliers in front of her apartment, offering one million yen(100万円) for any information about her killer. Sensing that the father might be right, Inspector Ukyō starts to investigate by first visiting her apartment. Looking behind a storage cabinet, the inspector discovers a yellow stain...
Locations
Chōfu-Shi(調布市) - Chofu City, where Berumezon West Apartments is located. People who died under suspicious circumstances will not always have autopsies performed in this city.
Higashi Chōfu Sho(東長府署) - East Chofu Police Station, the station that initially investigated Junko's death.
Berumezon Higashichōfu(ベルメゾン東調布) - Apartment where Junko lived.
Higashi Chōfu Sōgō Byōin(東調布総合病院) - East Chōfu General Hospital. Junko's father was hospitalized here.
Setagaya ku(世田谷区) - Setagaya District. The hair salon where Junko worked is located in this district. There is a law in place to perform autopsies on every body exhibiting suspicious conditions in this district.
Komae shi(狛江市) - Komae City. The bus Junko took to and from work ran from Chofu City through Komae City to the Setagaya District.
Characters appearing/mentioned in the story
Kengo Nakatsuru(中津留 健吾) - Junko's father who raised Junko as a single father. He used to work at a metal processing plant.
The last time Junko came home, they ended up arguing over a trivial matter. That was the last time he saw her alive.
Shortly after Junko's untimely death, some of Junko's high school friends told him about Junko's blog. In that blog, she mentioned that someone had left a perfume bottle in her mailbox three times, the last time three days before she died. Her coworkers and her customers were all women, and she did not have a boyfriend. The father concluded that whoever sent the perfume must have had one-sided feelings for her. He believes his daughter was murdered by that stalker. He handed out fliers in front of her apartment, hoping to find witness who can identify her killer.
After talking to the Tokumeigakari pair, he fell ill and was hospitalized. He has a heart problem, and he had been told that the next heart attack would most likely kill him. Shortly after leaving the hospital, he dies in front of Junko's apartment.
Junko Nakatsuru(中津留 順子) - 23 year old woman who worked at a beauty salon. After not showing up for work on on 11/14/2007, one of her coworkers dropped by and asked the apartment manger to unlock the doors to her room. Once inside, they discovered her body, still in pajamas, slumped on the floor. The police from the East Chōfu Police Station came over to examine the scene, and they ruled that Junko died from a heart attack.
Upon investigation, Inspector Ukyō discovers a circular stain left behind a drawer. CSI Yonezawa analyzes the stain and concludes that it contains a powerful cyanide compound. Reading through Junko's blog, the Tokumeigakari pair realize that she always drank a particular brand of orange juice called Plus Up Orange at night. This brand of orange juice an only be bought from one particular vending machine on the way home from her work. The killer must have mixed the poison inside the drink. CSI Yonezawa also finds an earprint outside her front door, most likely belonging to her stalker/killer.
Shōichi Nakatsuru(中津留 正一) - Kengo's elder brother. The Tokumeigari pair asks and gets his permission to investigate his younger brother's body at Kengo's funeral.
Takeaki Kumazawa(熊沢 武明) - Detective working at East Chōfu Police Station (東調布署 Higashi Chōfu-sho) who ruled Junko's death was natural. He has been an investor for thirty years.
Shinji Mitamura(三田村 真司) - Assistant at Jōnan University Science and Engineering Department(城南大学理工学部 Jōnan Daigaku rikō gakubu) who took the same bus to work as Junko. He is in charge of the keys to the cabinet storing poisonous chemicals at the university laboratory. According to him, the university has never lost or had stolen any dangerous chemicals. For each experiment, the student must fill out a request form to use these chemicals, and a professor is always present for these experiments. He performed an experiment using sodium cyanide on 9/21/2007.
Sakae Muroto(室戸 栄) - Jōnan University(城南大学) professor who had a chronic heart disease. He died in a similar way as Junko a month before (10/12/2007) she died. At an academic conference, he had severely criticized Assistant Mitamura's thesis. He kept his cup in his laboratory when he was alive.
Umemoto(梅本) - Medical examiner who ruled that Junko's death was due to an illness. He didn't perform an autopsy on Junko because Detective Kumazawa told him that her death was most likely natural.
