 Atsushi Yajima(八嶋 淳), a taxi driver, vanishes leaving his taxi cab near a bridge. A large quantity of his blood is discovered leading from his cab to to a nearby bridge. The Sōichi trio suspect and bring in Yajima's last customer, Kazuyuki Maruta(丸田 和之), for questioning. Sergeant Kaoru recognizes Maruta as the drunk man he had helped the previous day. Did Maruta really kill Yajima?

Characters appearing/mentioned in the story

Miki Fujisawa(藤沢 美紀) - Hostess who works at the Bar Yū(優). Miki was being stalked - the stalker secretly took pictures of her, made threatening calls using a voice changer, and broke into her apartment while she was out, stealing her underwear and moving items around. She reported these incidents to the Komazawa Police Station(駒沢署 Komazawa-Sho), but without any solid evidence or suspects, the police told her that there wasn't much they could do. As a result, she distrusts the police.

According to her, Maruta wasn't that drunk when he got on the cab to leave the bar. When asked about her relationship with Maruta, she claims that she only ate a single meal together with Maruta, and that Maruta has never visited her home.

However, it turns out that she confided in and discussed about her stalker to Maruta. Maruta tried to protect her - he even took a picture the stalker sent her and stormed in to the Komazawa Station, showing the police the picture and demanding that they do something.

Recently, she didn't take any phone calls with unlisted numbers fearing that the call was from the stalker, but after the Sōichi brought Maruta in for questioning, she starting taking calls without checking to see who was calling her.

Mai Fujisawa(藤沢 まい) - Miki's daughter. Maruta gave Mai flowers on her birthday. She tells the Tokumeigakari Pair that she made a promise to Maruta to open the blinds at her apartment every day so those flowers can receive sunlight.

Jun Yajima(八嶋 淳) - Former president of an IT company, currently a 45 year old taxi driver. He vanished one day, and his taxi was found near a bridge along with a bloody knife. The Sōichi found a blood trail leading from his taxi to a nearby bridge. A homeless staying near the area heard something big fall into the river the previous night. His taxi was left at the crime scene since 12:25 AM the previous night. He had recently been driving around in Roppongi and Akasaka. His boss didn't like him - Yajima acted as if he were looking down on the rest of the world.

Kazuyuki Maruta(丸田 和之) - Salesman for a real estate company. Sergeant Kaoru found Maruta passed out on the side of the road around 12:50 AM and took him to a police box. The next day, the Sōichi brought him in for suspicion of killing the taxi driver Yajima. A lighter from Bar Yū(優) left in the cab led them to Miki, a hostess working there, who pointed out that she called a cab for a drunk Maruta previous night. Maruta himself can't recall drinking that much the previous night, certainly not enough to pass out. However, the knife at the scene had his fingerprints and the blood on his pants matched the taxi driver's DNA. The crime scene was also located about five minutes away on foot from the side of the road where Sergeant Kaoru found him.

Mikio Yamauchi(山内 幹夫) - Gang member belonging to the Gin'yu-kai(銀雄会) who is in charge of the money that flows in the criminal world in the Jonan District(城南地区 Jōnan Chiku). He was arrested after he broke in and sear Yajima's apartment. The night Yajima disappeared, he dropped by Yajima's cab company's office and asked about Yajima's residence. He also talked to Yajima's former colleagues and Yajima's ex-wife.

Yasuyuki Hatano(秦野靖之) - The 41 year old tax accountant from Shinjuku(新宿) whose body turned up on Tokyo Bay ten days ago. He was hit on the head twice and stabbed five times. Just before he died, he had taken Atsushi Yajima(八嶋 淳)'s cab.
