Subtitle: Murderous Lecture(殺人講義)
Professor Shūhei Kasuga(春日 秀平) is carrying on an affair with his assistant, a graduate student named Kanako Shimada(島田 加奈子). One Tuesday night, the professor tells Kanako that he is going to leave his wife so that he can be with Kanako. The next morning, Kanako is found dead in her bed by her apartment manager Chizu Tōyama(遠山ちず). Kanako apparently committed suicide by drinking tetrodotoxin, a poison found in fugu. She left behind a note in which she wrote "I'm sorry, please forgive me, Kanako." in her own handwriting. Did Kanako really commit suicide, and if not, how did she die?
Characters appearing/mentioned in the story
Shūhei Kasuga(春日 秀平) - Professor of psychology at Seika University(成華大学). He is an aficionado of black tea, much like Inspector Ukyō.
Yoshie Kasuga(春日佳恵) - Professor Kasuga's wife.
Kanako Shimada(島田 加奈子) - Professor Kasuga's assistant who recently become a lecturer at the university. She was very serious, methodical, and a strong sense of responsibility.
From her household account book, Inspector Ukyō notices that every Tuesday and Friday, she didn't spend money on food, leading the inspector to deduce that she had dinner with someone else on those days, From this and the fact that no one (not even the nosy apartment manager) has seen or heard about the boyfriend, Inspector Ukyō suspects that Kanako might have been carrying on the clandestine affair with a married man.
Chizu Tōyama(遠山ちず) - Manager at the apartment where Kanako lived and a second mother to Kanako, at least according to the Chizu. After the police rule that Chizu's death was a suicide, she demands that the police reinvestigate Kanako's death saying she could not believe that Kanako would commit suicide.
Minoru Tōyama(遠山実) - Chizu's grandson who pointed out Tanabe as the man who gave Kanako rides back to her apartment.
Kentarō Tanabe(田辺 健太郎) - Graduate student who was observed driving Kanako back to her apartment. Kanako had been helping him with his research.
Kanako had a left a note on her refrigerator to remind herself that she needed to return a CD to him. Oddly enough, that note was written after she supposedly wrote her dying message.
