 Believing that someone has been stalking him for the past month, Yūji Komiyama(小見山 勇司) asks Sergeant Kaoru, who happened to be walking by, for help. Komiyama also reveals that he murdered Satoko Tsuboi(坪井 里子), a high school student, twenty years ago. Fearing for his life, Komiyama then asks the police for protection. The statute of limitations for Satko's murder had passed, but the police decide to question him and get a statement about the murder. Realizing that the police is more interested in having him make a public apology rather than protecting him, Komiyama leaves the police custody and returns to his apartment.

The police announce to the public that Riko's murderer has named him/herself, but without releasing Komiyama's name. Satoko's parents hear the news and visits the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department to find out who murdered their only daughter. They eventually end up in the Tokumeigakari office, where the Tokumeigakair pair tell Satoko's parents that the police can't reveal the killer's name by law. Frustrated by this situation, Sergeant Kaoru walks up to the family's house that night, but couldn't bring himself to go inside to reveal Komiyama's name to the family. The next day, Komiyama is found strangled to death, just as he had murdered Riko 20 years ago.

Because of Sergeant Kaoru's actions, he is under suspicion of releasing Komiyama's name to the Tsuboi family, and the Tsuboi family members are under the suspicion of murdering Komiyama.

Did Satoko's parents somehow find out Koimiyama's name and murder him to avenge their daughter's death?

Characters appearing/mentioned in the story

Sadakazu Tsuboi(坪井 貞一) - Satoko's father. He and his wife repeatedly visit the Tokumeigakari office and plead to the pair to reveal who killed their daughter.

Sachiko Tsuboi(坪井 幸子) - Satoko's mother. She slit her wrists a week after Satoko was strangled, but was saved by a policeman who happened to be passing by. She passes out after hearing that Satoko's murderer had turned himself in while watching the news on the TV.

Satoko Tsuboi(坪井 里子) - The 17 year old high school girl living in Omokagebashi(面影橋) who was murdered 20 years ago. She had just been hired at the workplace of her choice.

Yūji Komiyama(小見山 勇司) - 40 year old man who had been living in constant fear for the past 20 years after killing Satoko, a high school student. He felt that someone was stalking him for the past month and turns himself in, thinking that the police might be able to keep him safe. Because the statue of limitations for the murder had passed, unless Komiyama agrees, the police can't release Komiyama's name or face to the public. Realizing that the police might not be sympathetic, he leaves the Tokyo Metropolitan Police building, only to turn up dead a day later in his apartment room in Shinjuku(新宿). The CSIs found two sets of fingerprints besides Komiyama's own fingerprints in the apartment.

Recently, he had been listening to classic music records at a loud volume in his apartment room.

Minato Isao(港 功) - He was one of the five hundred investigators who searched for Satoko's murderer twenty years ago. He is currently the homicide investigation clerk for the first investigative division(捜査一課強行犯二係) at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. While he was a beat cop, he found Sachiko Tsuboi(坪井 幸子) after she had tried to commit suicide while making a routine patrol. He then worked to become a detective in the department so that he could investigate this case.

Yasuo Ōkubo(大久保 康雄) - Miwako's boss who tells her to forget about Satoko's case since the police will not divulge any new information about the culprit.

Haruki Ōkōchi(大河内 春樹) - General Inspector Ōkōchi grills Sergeant Kaoru this episode to determine whether and when he visited the Tsuboi residence and whether the Sergeant revealed Komiyama's information to Satoko's parents. He tells the sergeant that he'll have to decide the sergeant's fate after three days. Later, he also investigates Clerk Minato Isao(港 功).

Takashi Suzuki(鈴木 隆) - Komiyama's 26 year old next door neighbor who is studying for the second part of the Bar Exam. He tells the Sōichi that he heard Komiyama arguing with an older man the night he was murdered and that the man he saw wasn't Sadakazu Tsuboi(坪井 貞一). He works part time at a video rental store.

Kōken Onoda(小野田 公顕) - The Superintendent Supervisor questions Inspector Ukyō's decision to repeatedly meet the Tsuboi couple so that he could apologize and decline their request. Later, he meets with Superintendent Uchimura and General Inspector Ōkōchi to discuss what to do with Sergeant Kaoru and Clerk Isao.
