Characters appearing/mentioned in the story
Kōhei Jinkawa(陣川 公平) - Accounting clerk at the second division of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. He was apprehended because he was suspected of killing Nobuhiro Seguchi(瀬口 信大). Although the lieutenant refused to say anything at first, the Tokumeigakair pair eventually discover enough information to make him reveal how he ended up getting into a scuffle with Mr. Seguchi
Lieutenant Jinkawa ran into Ms. Shitō while he was searching for the culprit behind the recent spate of sexual assaults in the area. She mistook him as the stalker, and as a result, two men walking nearby subdued Lieutenant Jinkawa instead before he could reveal that he was a police officer. As a way to apologize, she invited the lieutenant to dinner, where she confided that an anonymous caller had been calling her home late at night. He escorted Ms. Shitō to her apartment, where the lieutenant discovered that someone had poured a gooey substance over her mail. Ms. Shitō then rushed the lieutenant to her apartment so that he could clean his hands. There, she pointed through her window at a man walking briskly away and claimed that the suspicious man had been staring up at her apartment. Immediately afterwards, someone called her apartment. The lieutenant answered the phone, demanding to know who the caller was and what he wanted. The caller immediately didn't say anything and hung up immediately.
To catch the stalker, Lieutenant Jinkawa disguised himself on a day off, secretly keeping an eye on Ms. Shitō's mailbox. Around lunchtime that day, Mr. Seguchi walked up to Ms. Shitō's mailbox and placed his hands inside. Lieutenant Jinkawa came out of hiding and demanded Mr. Seguchi explain what he was doing. Mr. Seguchi tried to run away, and they got into a scuffle. Mr. Seguchi succeeded in throwing the lieutenant on to the ground and ran down the stairs. When the lieutenant manged to get up and look down, he found Mr. Seguchi's body sprawled on the middle landing section of the stairs. The Lieutenant ran down the stairs to check on Mr. Seguchi and discovered him dead. That's when a beat cop patrolling on a bicycle rode by and demanded to know what's going on. Of course, as expected, Lieutenant Jinkawa had forgotten to bring his police badge this day.
