Aibou TV Season 4 Episode 16 - A Genius's Genealogy(天才の系譜)

Subtitle: A Genius's Genealogy(天才の系譜)

Walking around the city one night, Sergeant Kaoru observes Inspector Ukyō handing money to a young woman and hugging her. Sergeant Kaoru was concerned that the inspector was paying the woman for her services, but she turns out to be Inspector Ukyō's photographer niece Hana Sugishita who came to visit him from New York. Around the same time, a woman's body washes up on Hiratsuka Coast(平塚海岸) with her hands and feet tied behind her back. Hana Sugishita discovers the woman's identity by accident, aided by observational skills reminiscent of Inspector Ukyō's skills. Can she also track down her killer, or will the killer get to her first?

Characters appearing/mentioned in the story

Hana Sugishita(杉下 花) - Art photographer living in New York, She is Inspector Ukyō's niece who attended Harvard. When she first meet Sergeant Kaoru, she guesses that Sergeant Kaoru ate curry rice for lunch based on the curry left on his face and clothing.

They later visit Hana no Sato where Ms. Tamaki reveals that her store was named after Hana.

While there, the inspector and Hana get into an argument over their relationship in the Sugishta family tree. According to Hana, she is the eldest daughter of the second son of the adoptive daughter of the brother of your great-grandfather of Inspector Ukyō(おじ様のひいお爺様の兄の長女の養子の次男の長女 Oji-sama no hī ojīsama no ani no chōjo no yōshi no jinan no chōjo).

But according to Inspector Ukyō, she is the eldest daughter of the second son of the adoptive daughter of the brother of his great grandfather(ひいお爺様の弟の長女の養子の次男の長女 hī ojīsama no otōto no chōjo no yōshi no jinan no chōjo).

When she was younger, Inspector Ukyō tutored her in her studies and culture. She gives Sergeant Kaoru a book with her photographs titled Tokyo Omokage, her first work that was published five years ago. The book was subject of popular talk in New York. Inspector Ukyō, however, considers the book a mistake, since the book's success led her to quit graduate school and become a full-time photographer. The inspector was the first person to praise the pictures she took, but he only wanted her to take pictures as a hobby, not make it a life's work. Besides meeting Inspector Ukyō, she returned to Tokyo to take pictures for volume two of Tokyo Omokage, showing how the city has changed in five years.

She later drops by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and declares that she discovered the identity of the woman whose body washed ashore and her killer. While walking in a Tokyo neighborhood with Shōichirō Kaneda(金田 昭一郎) after taking a few pictures of the town, she noticed that Christmas roses at the Ninomiya residence are dying - they probably had not been watered for a week. Christmas roses require a great deal of care for it to bloom successfully. Later, she also caught the husband lying that his wife is staying with her parents. Shōichirō Kaneda(金田 昭一郎) adds that the couple constantly fought, and the wife disappeared the day after they had a particularly nasty fight that ended with a loud noise. Hana and Mr. Kaneda believe that the husband must have killed the wife.

Inspector Ukyō is not convinced by her reasoning and demands that she stop playing amateur detective. Hana is indignant, and to prove that she is right, she sneaks into the Ninomiya residence from the unlocked front door when no one was there. However, she is caught by the husband when he came back and is apprehended by the police. The Tokumeigakari pair scold her in the interrogation room, where she reveals that she grabbed a photograph of Kayoko. Inspector Ukyō scolds her yet again, saying that she also committed larceny in addition to unlawfully entering the premises. The photograph proves useful however, and they're able to match it to the victim.

This is the only episode we see her, at least so far(end of season 12).

Trivia: Hana pours black tea in the same distinctive way Inspector Ukyō does.

Shōichirō Kaneda(金田 昭一郎) - Town chairman, and former sailor. He helped Hana take pictures by taking her along on his boat. She also took his picture five years ago along with his son who passed away later from cancer at the young age of twenty. He retired from sailing three years ago, but he still cares about the town he lives in. For example, he makes sure that people leave trash at the designated pickup spot only on the assigned pickup day in the week,

He tells Hana and the Tokumeigakari pair that the Ninomiya couple argued so loudly every night that he could hear them from inside his house. About a week ago, they had an exceptionally heated argument. Mr. Kaneda heard the sound of glass breaking and hasn't seen Kayoko since then.

Takeshi Kaneda(金田 たけし) - Shōichirō's son who passed away from cancer at the age of twenty.

Junpei Ninomiya(二ノ宮 純平) - Gardener. He tells Hana that his wife Kayoko became sick and is now staying at her parent's house in Ibaraki. However, Hana noticed that he had received a postcard addressed to Kayoko from her parents postmarked two days ago.

After he is brought to the police interrogation room, he confesses that he got into an argument with his wife because his salary was reduced yet again. Frustrated, he then left the house, got into a car, and drove away. After spending a night away in Kasai(葛西 Kasai) inside his car, he went back home to discover that his wife wasn't there. He assumed that she had gone to stay with her parents.

Kayoko Ninomiya(二ノ宮 加代子) - Junpei's wife, Her body was found at Hiratsuka Coast(平塚海岸) in Kanagawa Prefecture. She had been dead for about a week when her body washed up. Her hands were tied with a distinctive knot.
